Wow! Miami Beach Gay Pride 2010 was an unbelievable experience. I ran into so many people and it really felt fantastic to be a part of the community. I didn’t feel like I had to watch my back or apologize for my lifestyle choices, even if it’s just for one day. At least I got to experience that feeling of belonging and share pride with so many old and new friends. Some people, and I know I’ve been guilty too, bash pride parades because they think it’s pointless and stupid to “perpetuate” the stereotype but I realized today that Gay Pride day is more than just half-naked men dressed in neon colored thongs and glitter dancing to house music on a fairy float. It allows people who chose to live their life freely and openly the opportunity to express their joy or their gay without the fear of persecution or shame. And that is definitely something to be proud of!If you haven’t experienced a gay pride day, I hope that you will get a chance to do so. The sooner, the better. It has certainly changed my views about the LGBT community. The big take-away is this overwhelming sense of responsibility that I now feel in regards to my role as a member of the LGBT community.
